Backyard Putting Green Cost & Design Guide (Florida)

There’s a specific moment we see on every putting green install, from Palm Beach Gardens to Boca Raton: the cups are set, the fringe is trimmed, and the homeowner sinks the first putt in their own backyard. The grin is always the same. Here’s what it costs to get there, and how the design actually works.
The cost, straight up
Govorex builds backyard putting greens starting at $12 per square foot, fully installed. That includes the part that makes or breaks a green — sculpted base shaping — plus the precision putting surface, cup placement, and fringe.
| Green | Size | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Putt & chip corner | ~300 sq ft | ~$3,600 |
| Standard practice green | ~600 sq ft | ~$7,200 |
| Multi-cup showpiece | ~1,000 sq ft | ~$12,000 |
Financing applies here like everything we install: 50% down, then 12 equal monthly payments, no interest. Outline your future green on the instant quote calculator to see your starting number tonight.
Why putting turf isn’t lawn turf
A putting surface is engineered backwards from ball behavior: short, dense, low-nap fibers that deliver true roll and consistent speed, session after session. Lawn turf is engineered for looks and feel underfoot. They’re cousins, not twins — and the novelty “green” made from regular turf is how backyard greens get a bad name.
The other half of realism is invisible: the base is the green. We sculpt the sub-base to create breaks, then compact it so the contour you bought is the contour you putt in year five. On Florida’s sandy soils, that compaction discipline is everything.
Designing a green you’ll actually use
After years of golf-community installs around Jupiter — where serious short games live — our design advice comes down to four choices:
1. Prioritize putts over yardage. A green you can reach with a wedge from the patio gets used daily. Chasing a long carry usually costs practice value.
2. Ask for real breaks. Dead-flat greens teach dead-flat putting. A subtle left-to-right here, a ridge there — your home green should sharpen your read, not flatter it.
3. Multiple cups, always. Three or four positions multiply the practice lines and spread the wear.
4. Plan the fringe. A collar of taller fringe turf frames the green, catches chips, and makes the whole build look like it grew there.
What about sun, rain, and maintenance?
Same answers as all quality synthetic turf, tuned for greens: UV-stabilized surfaces hold color through Florida summers, the compacted base drains downpours fast enough for an evening session after an afternoon storm, and upkeep is an occasional brush and rinse. No mowing at eighth-of-an-inch, no greenskeeper’s budget — that’s the point.
